Understanding How Counselling Can Help You

We often recognise that 'talking things through' and 'getting things off our chest' can help us to feel better. But what about those issues we are too scared or worried about to share with those close to us? Perhaps we worry what friends, family or work colleagues will think for fear of being judged, or simply we don't wish to over burden others with our personal problems. We might instead choose to ignore our difficulties, hoping they will go away in time but, unfortunately, suppressing our feelings can contribute to anxiety and may even lead to depression. Listed above are just some of the personal issues where counselling can make a real difference and, of course, there are many more.

Counselling provides the opportunity to explore how someone thinks, feels and behaves and, by looking at our patterns of behaviour, we can discover new opportunities about how to improve how we connect and communicate with those around us, and create real positive changes in our lives.

Counselling also importantly provides a confidential and non-judgemental environment, and is a safe space for you to talk through and explore your difficulties.  Not everyone can pinpoint what has contributed to their feelings, they just know they would like to talk to someone with an aim to thinking or feeling differently from the way they do now.  A Counsellor can help you gently explore areas of your life and together you can agree exactly what it is you would like to achieve from your therapy.  Whatever you choose, your counselling experience will be unique to you.
